IT Band Tendonitis

Treating IT Band Tendonitis often involves a combination of ice, physical therapy, and cross training. Sometimes a cortisone shot is recommended and on occasion, your orthopedic doctor may recommend an MRI to make sure you do not have a meniscal tear.
In order to deal with IT Band Tendonitis, it is critical that you do some very good stretching so that the IT band does not become inflamed. You may also benefit from shoe inserts or orthotics with arch support if your feet tend to pronate while running.
Also known as medial tibial periostitis, many a runner has been afflicted with the pain of shin splints. Shin splints tend to generate a sharp pain that may be difficult to locate specifically. The pain often begins when running and then is sometimes even experienced during walking.
Pain from shin splints most often begins when people increase mileage too quickly or change running surfaces often to something harder like concrete. It is more common for people with pronated or flat feet.
Shin splints are best treated with a good stretching routine that a physical therapist may recommend. Arch supports in the form of orthotics are also often recommended to correct pronation. Ice, cross training, and running on softer surfaces may be helpful.
If you are experiencing pain when you extend your foot, and your Achilles tendon is tender when you touch it, you may have Achilles tendonitis. Achilles tendonitis may be treated with ice and physical therapy. A cortisone shot is not recommended for Achilles tendon pain.
Sometimes water running using a flotation device is helpful since it alleviates the pressure on the tendon. In extreme cases, your orthopedic doctor might recommend an MRI in order to make sure you do not have a partial Achilles tendon tear.
If you are suffering from a running injury, it can feel like it takes forever to get over the pain. It is important to remember that your running injury is likely caused by overuse. It is smart for you to consider cross training and trying some other physical activities that do not agitate your current running injury.
