Starting up Hackers for Charity at Champlain

Postby ben.actis » Tue Sep 15, 2009 1:24 pm

I spoke yesterday to the heads of the Center for Engagement here at Champlain and they are interested in working with us in this endeavor. Who is interested in running this project as committee head?

and if you haven't heard of it. Check out this interview. (thanks chad for the link)

For anyone who hasn't heard of Hackers for Charity before, check out this interview with Johnny Long: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srI8QI7DKiU#t=32m34s

thanks

I'll be involved with this project, but don't think I can be the committee head. Chad, you interested in that job?

Chad is feeling a bit sick right now but I'll tell him to check the forum. If he doesn't feel like he wants to be the committee head, I'd be happy to co-head it with him. I know he was really interested in this project so I'll try to let him know as soon as possible.

Ok update...as far as seniors and people who need LEAD are conerned

Seniors

Hello,

It appears that you will still need to complete the SOC 295: Community Service Course to graduate. This course will be offered a limited number of times in the future, students who entered in the regular curriculum since the Lead program began are not taking it. Please register for it next spring.

There is the possibility of a course waiver in some cases. If you have a history of service you may qualify. Please note, the waiver is for the course, not the credit. You still need 120 credits to graduate. The attached file has information about applying for a course waiver. You may want to discuss this with your academic advisor.

Best wishes in the new school year,

Dr. Rowley

^I don't know if the prof actually read my email. But the form has to be submitted by mid semester (ie before we'd sign up for spring class.) We must account for facts about the services performed, the role and responsibilities we held in the organization, dates of the service and time we spent (45 hours)...AND write this in a paper form. I think this will meet the requirement.

As LEAD requirements

Thank you for your email and your interest. We have Community Building Proposal Form which outlines our requirements for LEAD credit approval. Please fill out the attached worksheet for each event you would like to propose for LEAD credit and email it back to me. A committee of staff and students will review the proposals and decide if it meets our criteria for LEAD credit. This committee generally meets biweekly.

Please feel free to stop by my office to ask any questions you may have about this process. It sounds like you are beginning some wonderful new initiatives!

Best of luck!
Jen

^Regarding the form she speaks about. W have to state that its educational (fixing pcs qualifies I believe), Exposure to New Community/public issue or problem (also works), and reflection (again we can cover this in presentation)

I would like us to talk more about Hackers for Charity at the next meeting, as I have been thinking about the possibility of running for committee head. I have contacts with the owner of Pine Computers, as I used to work there, and I believe he would be more than willing to donate used hardware to us.

As CNIS guy we should also remember the security aspect of this project. Now I don't think that the people who we donate to are going to run right out and get encase and winhex and steal credit card information off of the computer we donate, but I think there certainly has to be some sort of sterilization of these computers or at least wave some kind of protection charm over them.

Great point John. The Ultimate Boot CD has a DoD wipe utility we can use to wipe all the hard drives we receive.
